Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose. Glucose is one of the three main source of energy in our body. The glucose first broken down to smaller saccharides by insulin and transported by blood to body cells for energy. People with diabetes have a problem of their insulin regulations.

About 422 million people have diabetes, the majority living in low-and middle-income countries, and 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes each year. Both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have been increasing the past few decades.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and it has become the greatest challenge we have recently encountered. When patients with diabetes cannot control their sugar levels, they are generally at risk for a number of diabetes-related complications. People being more likely to stay at home during pandemic, rarely doing physical activities, fewer social contacts and hence may have less exposure to the virus.

In order to commemorate the World Diabetes Day 2021 which is November 14, CIMSA FK UIN SH held a webinar, virtual workout class, and air campaign, called INSULIN (Increase Understanding and Realization of Diabetes) with the main topic about diabetes and its correlation to obesity on November 13, 2021. We held a webinar with dr. Witri Ardini, M.Gizi, Sp.GK and dr. Emiliana Kartika from Sobat Diabet as speakers. They delivered directly to the participants regarding diabetes, early prevention methods for young people, and nutrition in healthy lifestyle. Lots of tips and tricks that we can do in order to prevent diabetes, with the focus on lifestyle modification.

After the seminar ended, the activity was continued with virtual workout class in collaboration with Genggobyos. The activity opened by a talkshow about facts of diabetes with dr. Intan Nurjannah, Sp.PD and Ms. Riana Bismarak from Genggobyos, who is also became the instructor for the virtual workout class.

In the next day, the activity was continued with an air campaign through Instagram on November 14, 2021. The participants will post their activities to implement a healthy lifestyle. We hoped that with this series of activities, more people will know and care about themselves and those around them related to diabetes and its preventive actions by starting to live healthily from an early age.
